Algarve Area

There is much to do and see in the area surrounding Lagos. The following are a few of the most popular places to go on a day out away from the town, just a short drive away.
The highest mountain in the Algarve, the Monchique area is famous for its spa town of Caldas de Monchique and breathtaking scenery. A trip to Monquique should always include a visit to Foia, the highest point in the Algarve, and a visit to one of the local restaurants, famous for their "chicken piri-piri" and local fire water; "medronho". Monchique is also popular for its downhill mountain biking and hiking trails.
West coast
The West coast has been a favourite for many years for surfing, with some of the best surfing conditions in the world to be found along the entire west coast of Portugal. Garrett McNamarra recently broke his world record for highest wave surfed at Nazare, set the previous year by him at the same spot. Popular spots close to Lagos include Amado/Carrapateira surfing beach and the historic town of Aljezur. There are also numerous national parks in the area, which are great for hiking, mountain biking and sightseeing.
In 2008, the Algarve International Circuit was opened. This autodromoincludes a FIA approved track, karting track and Technology Park. There are regular F1 testing days, Moto GP, touring cars and track days. A great experience for petrolheads.
The town of Sagres is the most westerly town in Europe as was dubbed "the end of the world" by Portuguese navigators setting off to explore the new world to the West. It is home to an impressive fort and is a great choice for a day of sightseeing.
